Two sisters grew up in the same valley and came to believe it was two different valleys.

The Leaving

The younger one left at nineteen with a suitcase and a theory about herself. The older one stayed, and married, and took the farm, and did not once say the word abandoned out loud, which is not the same as not thinking it.

They spoke at Christmas. The calls were warm and cost them both something.

The younger one thought: she never asks about my life. The older one thought: she never asks about mine.

They were both correct, which is the usual arrangement.

Eighteen Years

Here is what eighteen years does. It does not create a wound. A wound would have been simpler — a wound you can point at, and apologise for, and treat.

It creates a distance, made of a thousand ordinary days in which nothing happened, and you cannot apologise for a thousand days in which nothing happened. There is no sentence for it. There is no card.

Family is not the tie that binds. It is the river that keeps flowing, and two people standing on opposite banks, both waiting for the other one to build the bridge.

The Kitchen

Their mother's illness did what illness does. It put them in a kitchen together at two in the morning with nothing to do but wait.

They did not have the conversation. People rarely have the conversation.

What happened was that the older one made tea without asking how the younger one took it, and got it right, and the younger one noticed her getting it right, and had to go and stand in the hall for a minute.

That was all. That was the entire reconciliation.

After

They are not close now. That word is doing too much work.

They text. The younger one knows the names of her nieces and the older one has visited the flat twice and said it was nice, and meant it, and did not say it was small.

The river kept flowing the whole time. That is what rivers do. It turned out neither of them had to build anything — they only had to stand on the bank long enough to notice they were looking at the same water.
